Description
A wonderful all original English striking mantle clock produced by ECWM, under the ‘Empire’ brand. Empire was a 1924 Trading Name of ECWM, (the 'English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd'), formed after the merger of H.W.Williamson Ltd of Coventry, and London based makers Grimshaw, Baxter and J.J Elliott Ltd in Oct 1921. The trade name came into being following the 1924 British Empire Exhibition. However in 1932, ECWM was purchased by Smiths English Clocks Ltd of London, who continued to use the Empire name for a number of years. Therefore, this 1920’s clock was built before that takeover, making it highly collectable and rare. All the component parts on this quality timepiece are certainly authentic, further adding to the clocks rarity and collectability and helping with the clocks dating. (ECWM heart-shaped winding keys and Empire circular pendulum bobs and brass gong blocks had unique and bespoke designs and finishes. Due to this, they frequently went missing from their host clocks and replaced with cheaper, non-authentic foreign variations). The clocks attractively designed dark Oak arched case has fabulous tiger stripped graining with a line of hand-carved 'toothing' running along the top of the clocks platformed base. The clean silvered dial has black painted Roman numerals and is signed at the top by retailer “A. Wehrle & Sons Ltd, Cambridge”, and at the bottom “Made in England.” The dial is complemented by a pair of black Heavy Double Swell Spade hands secured by a pinned collet and covered by convex glaze mounted in a robust and solid brass bezel standard to Empire clocks pre-1932. The clocks smooth yet sturdy Mark 3, Empire 8-day pendulum driven striking movement is a quality piece of engineering, with the grain finished brass backplate showing both the famous Empire logo and the movement serial number (4473) which are stamped onto the plate. The clock strikes the hours and half-hours on its gong, with a deep and confident chime synonymous with Empire clocks. This really is a rare opportunity to own a truly all authentic, all original high-quality English striking mantle clock from the late 1920’s period.
