Description
Gilbert Baldry (1876-1928) A Large Exceptional Edwardian Oil Portrait Painting Brief Description: This is an exceptional quality, all-original, large Edwardian full-length Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting the young handsome 'William Fairrie' who is wearing a white dress with a blue sash, and holding a leather-bound riding crop in one hand. 'Gilbert Baldry' (1876-1928, British). Baldry was a portrait painter of prominent British figures, including 'William Hall Walker, 1st Baron Wavertree' (Warranty Museum & Art Gallery), 'Louisa Matilda Scott, Mrs York' (National Trust, Erdigg, North Wales), 'John Edward Courtenay Bodley' (Balliol Colleague, Oxford) and more. Baldry works are rarely offered for sale, and almost all of Baldry's other known works are currently held in Museums or some of The National Trust Establishments. Sitter: William Fairrie, Nephew of James Fairrie, founder of Fairrie Sugar (Originally part of the Tate & Lyle Co LTD) of Liverpool. The magnificent image portrays the young brown-eyed and curly-haired William, who can be seen smiling with his elbow resting on a carved hexagon table. He is wearing a frilly white dress with a blue sash and a pair of dainty bobbled shoes, and, in his right hand, he is holding what appears to be a leather-bound riding crop. Superbly executed throughout and a very desirable subject matter. The images do not do this piece justice! The painting is entirely free from any previous repairs or restoration, and it benefits from the date (1906) and the signature of the artist lower-left corner. The painting arrived with us in a perfectly preserved original condition, however, it was unframed, and so we have since remounted the piece in a truly beautiful quality and substantial Ebony-black moulded frame, which was completed by the prestigious frame makers 'Gale & Co, Birmingham'. This piece will certainly be the main talking point of any room in which you choose to place it.
