Description
Louis FORTUNEY (1875-1951) Pastel Buying Flowers South of France
A charming pastel drawing of an “elegante” buying flowers probably inToulon in the south of France by the renowned pastellist, Louis Fortuney. He lived and worked in Paris, where he found inspiration from café society drawing mostly elegant young women. In later life he moved to the south of France where he turned his attention to capturing everyday life. It is from this later period that this work dates.
Fortuney studied at Beaux Arts school in Toulouse and was influenced by the work of Toulouse Lautrec, Gervex, Sisley and Renoir. He was something of an anarchist refusing to have any dealings with the official salons and dealers.
