James Tarr RCA (1905-1996) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker and teacher, born at Oystermouth, Swansea. He attended Cheltenham School of Art, 1921–1924, and Royal College of Art, 1924–1928, being a Royal College of Art Scholar, 1928–1929. Taught at Colchester School of Art, 1929–31, then after art school appointments in Hull and Derby was principal at Lydney and High Wycombe Schools of Art, finally until retirement at Cardiff School of Art, 1946–1970. Continued to live in Cardiff, painting, sculpting and making prints until his sight failed. Tarr won first prizes for landscape and portrait at the 1930 Royal National Eisteddfod, adding the first prize for landscape at the 1932 Eisteddfod. Group exhibitions included Ra Summer Exhibitions, Sea, Swg, Wac and in London and other provincial galleries.
I met James Tarr back in the mid 1980's and bought several paintings from him which like this example, show an interesting element of Bloomsbury.
The painting is signed on the stretcher in pencil. The work is framed in a good quality hand finished frame.
A very attractive painting.
