Description
This is a fabulous and rare group of twelve + four original 17th Century period antique engraving's that are all framed within their fabulous original ebonised glazed frames. There is a set of 12 Engravings that all depict Countesses. I believe they are after paintings by Sir Anthony Van Dyke (1599-1641). The list of pieces is as follows:- Pierre Lombart, French/British 1612/13-1681- Countesses, after Anthony van Dyck; twelve engravings, one bears a later indistinct inscription, 34.9 x 24.3 cm. and smaller, together with John Smith, British 1652-1742- Portraits of ladies, after Godfrey Kneller; four mezzotints, 34.5 x 25 cm. and smaller, sixteen altogether (16). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lombart's 'Countesses' is a series of twelve engravings produced c.1660 after Anthony van Dyck's (1599-1641) originals, depicting prominent ladies (and two earls) at the court of Charles I (1600-1649). The sitters depicted include Rachel, Countess of Middlesex; Anne, Countess of Morton; Margaret, Countess of Carlisle; Lucy, Countess of Carlisle; Elizabeth, Countess of Castlehaven; Penelope, Lady Herbert; Elizabeth, Countess of Devon; Dorothy, Countess of Sunderland; Anne, Countess of Bedford; Anna Sophie, Countess of Carnarvon; Philip, Earl of Pembroke; and Henry, Earl of Arundel. Smith's mezzotints after Godfrey Kneller's (1646-1723) portraits depict Arabella Hunt; Madam D'Avenant; the Duchess of St Albans; and the Duchess of Grafton.
