Gentleman's original WW2 Swiss Longines 16 jewel wrist watch with ivory dial (red 12) in a solid 9ct gold case with solid gold buckle. C ~1937. This watch was given by his Parents to John Vinter Gurteen (21st Birthday present) who was in 504 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve - sadly shot down in combat and killed in action (Hurricane Pilot) on Friday 15th September 1940. All the paperwork shown will be included with the watch. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +3/-3 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. DIAL;- Attractive pale ivory dial in good condition - showing some age patina and fading as to be expected. Signed clearly in black script with the retailer name; BARRACLOUGH LEEDS (Zachariah Barraclough and Sons, registered; 1896, Briggate, Leeds, West Yorkshire). Heavily scrolled Arabic numbers (note the lovely little arrow tip to number 4), the 12 in red (slightly faded) with black minute markers and bolder black 5 minute markers to chapter ring. Finely cut, original blued steel Breguet Moon hands (have lost a lot of the blueing) and original blued steel seconds hand, all in lovely straight order. Recessed sub dial with black seconds markers and black seconds chapters. Slightly domed crystal in bright order showing few little surface scratches commensurate with age (I decided not to change this to keep originality). CASE;- The solid 9ct gold (2.7cm width excluding the winder, 3.1cm lug to lug), original 'cushion' case is in lovely condition - absolutely no indentations and just a few overall light little surface scratches (again showing under eyeglass only) commensurate with age. The back cover carries the name of the Hurricane pilot; J.V.GURTEEN and is dated; 10.2.37 (10th February 1937). Fully and clearly hallmarked to the inside of the back cover; 9.375 (within oblong and 'diamond' shaped cartouches), carries the import Assay mark and lower case Gothic letter; p - dating it to 1930 (London). Also carries the makers initials; AB (Alfred Bedford), stamped; SWISS and numbered; 5002229. MOVEMENT; The high grade Longines 16 jewel fire gilt plate lever movement is in excellent condition, is clearly stamped to the top plates; LONGINES 16 JEWELS SWISS MADE and is numbered to the bottom plate (to the side of the balance assembly); 11.84N. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions. Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull out/push in click action is very firm and true. STRAP:- Complete with the original 16mm brown leather (still supple) stitched strap which is in good condition with no undue wear. Measures a long 22cm / 8 1/2" total length and I wonder if it was made to fit over John's flying jacket. BUCKLE:- Original solid 9ct rose gold 17mm buckle which is stamped to the back; 9CT and carries the makers name (slightly rubbed); BW&Co. BOX; New green display/presentation box. APPRAISAL;- A top quality Gentleman's Swiss Longines timepiece which was much loved and for a short 3 years proudly worn - a true piece of World War Two history. Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered very securely and safely packed. ***WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE *** UK - FREE! Royal Mail Registered Next Day (Signed For) Delivery.
