J.W. BENSON Silver Birmingham Half Hunter Pocket Watch 1927
You are bidding on an original high quality J.W. Benson half hunter pocket watch hallmarked for Birmingham 1927. I have some silver chains in stock to match with this pocket watch so please see my other listing or contact me for more.
Dial: The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals, outer minute divisions and a subsidiary seconds dial at the six. The dial has blued hands with a double spade which is made for half hunters. The dial is signed:" J.W. Benson, London" in the upper centre.
Movement: The English Benson movement has 17 jewels and a high regulator. The screwed in jewels makes it special. The movement is signed: "J.W. BENSON, LONDON, 17 Jewels, Swiss Made". The movement is in working condition; however we cannot guarantee accuracy for an antique pocket watch.
Case: The pocket watch is lying in a silver half hunter case with a smooth finish. The front cover has Roman numerals with minute divisions and the flip spring is missing. The inner side of the case and the inner side of the cuvette are both hallmarked for Birmingham 1927, and signed "ALD". They are both numbered: 530008.
Signed: J.W. Benson, Birmingham - Diameter: 52mm Swiss made - 1927
The half-hunter is attributed to Napoleon I who, it is said, cut a hole in the cover of his hunter with a knife to facilitate observation from the watch without needing to open. The half-hunter is sometimes referred to as a Demi-Hunter or Napoleon.
