Very attractive inlaid walnut ex combination writing box. Unspoilt patina with an excellent balance of dark/lighter tones to the walnut. Beautifully inlaid to the top and front with bands comprising of numerous triangular pieces of Mother of Pearl and abalone shell and thin veneer all set within outer cross grain veneer with outer edges of pewter strips. The bands are complemented by the inlaid surrounds to the Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon. The inlays are in very good condition. Some restoration to the ebonised edging of the box as to be expected on a box of such age. All of the walnut is original and complete. The lid opens to reveal a gilt embossed leather frame to the lid interior with a replacement panel. The front folds forward to give access to the sloping writing platform that has been replaced to match the material used in the lid panel. Office section comprising of, stamp slope, dished pen tray with storage space beneath and inkwell section complete with a genuine antique inkwell with silver plated top and attached cork stopper. The inkwell is I am certain a replacement……it fits the section very well but is of an earlier period. Storage section beneath the top half of the writing platform for miscellaneous stationery.
Hinges and lock in very good condition with a working key supplied. A fine looking box, the exterior inlays arguably comprising of a combination of the most colourful forms of inlay used on antique boxes…..primarily due to the abalone shell.
