Victorian inlaid burr walnut writing box in very fine condition with a few unusual features for a box of the style and period. The fact that the piece features fine quality veneer to all aspects of the exterior rather than just to the top and front is one of the indications of the quality of the item. Inlaid with hexagonal Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon with Tunbridge Ware style surrounds. Please note the Tunbridge Ware style bands that extend down the full depth of the back of the box rather than ending at the bottom edge of the lid as is the case with the vast majority of similar boxes. Another indication of the quality and clearly made to be pleasing to the eye from every view point. The box boasts the all important unspoilt patina. All veneer and inlays are original and complete. The top closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock. Key for decorative purposes only. The interior fittings are quite unusual. Original solid mahogany section to the lid interior with the original dividers. Offers six sections of various dimensions for stationery. The sprung panel can be angled forward by pressing a catch to the lid interior by the lock hasp. The top surface of the base section features the original surface with the original embossed leather surround for ‘quick’ note/letter writing. The panel can be raised and folded forward to provide a sloping writing surface. Please note the quite unusual manner in which the panel is hinged to a separate piece of wood that raises up so that the panel can be angled and supported without placing strain upon the hinges. The writing slope features the original leather with gilt and blind embossed borders and corner motifs. With the slope in position access is given to the mahogany lined storage area and the ‘office’ section comprising of the usual stamp slope, removable dished pen tray with storage space beneath and inkwell section complete with what is quite possibly the original inkpot in unused condition! A few items like a dip nib pen and piece of sealing wax have been added to ‘complete’ the item. It is always nice to be able to offer any style of antique box that is in some way different and even better when the quality, condition and degree of original features is to such an extent as this item. Must recommend.
