A good early c19th polychrome Derby figurine.
Sir John Falstaff.
Bearing the hand painted mark for Derby to the rear.
An impressive palette of colours with wonderful details on the fabric and face.
Generously gilded and in generally exellent condition.
A near identical figurine can be found in the V & A collection. Please Search refererence S.2063-1986.
A small repair necessary to the cutlass where only the hilt remains. Easy enough to fashion a new blade and add it to the socket, which seems to have been the original method of construction, judging by the glaze on top of the cutlas and pin hole aperture. Reassuringly the V & A example seems to have suffered the same fate.
Nonetheless, a highly presentable c19th figure in good company.
