Description

Rarely seen and generally unrecognised, this finely modelled and well coloured Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figure of "Sarah Siddons as Lady MacBeth" ~ P E18 ~ H 1056a is frequently mistaken for Queen Victoria, of whom many similar figures exist. It is however noticeable that the figure here depicted does not wear a riband or sash, which item of rank would normally feature in portrait figures of the Queen. Standing, wearing a crown and an ermine edged cloak over a long dress, her right hand over her right breast, she here clutches at a handkerchief in her left hand. Both scions of a famous theatrical family, for reasons explained in "Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era", Pugh suggests that this figure is a pair to that of her brother John Philip Kemble ~ P E17, in the role of Hamlet. Since this figure does not at present appear to be catalogued by Harding, we have, for reference purposes and for the sake of clarity, taken the liberty of here assigning to it the reference number H 1056a. Circa 1845. Ref. AEVSPPFSSALMPE18H1056a-20
