Description
Antique oak country made farmhouse kitchen cupboard or hall armoire made in France probably, or elsewhere on the continent, most likely around 1880. Two doors opening onto a removable shelf (which we've added, though it's had one before) with a row of coathooks above. Two short drawers at the base. The internal floor is a lot lower than the door frame. Blacksmith hand made handles on the doors and drawers: the door handles are interesting in that, apart from their unusual curling design, they latch upwards, pivoting under their own weight. The top comes off the base and has itself been cut in two in the past; handy for transport as it's a heavy and quite large piece. No lock for the key hole now. The finish is a fairly matte stain, probably original.

condition
Condition is pretty good structurally: it's a solid piece and fits together well enough, though a bit tricky and needs two people really. The doors and drawers work ok: the odd bit of rubbing here and there but fine. The left door is a bit warped and so sticks out a little at the top. An old turn button would sort that if it's an issue. Cosmetically there are quite a few chips, chunks, scrapes and marks, showing a hard working life; all part of the look really. We haven't waxed the cupboard at all; it has a slightly medieval, out-of-a-barn look (though we've cleaned it a fair bit, inside and out). It can easily be waxed; that'll look great, a bit darker and with a sheen, and still old looking, but its current look is rather a rare state which I think might be quite desirable. Anyway, it's easy to add wax, hard to remove it.. There has been some woodworm in it, particularly on the base; it all looked long gone but we've thoroughly treated it for good measure anyway.
