Description
This is a superb quality late 19th Century antique desk with original chair made by Anders Svensson of Malmo. Svensson was a cabinet maker to the swedish royal family and this piece was ordered by jacob gleerup, son of C.W.K Gleerup.
C.W.K Gleerup was very well known in the publishing trade and this was carried on by his son Jacob. The desk and chair remained in the family till recently. There is a picture showing the desk in it's original setting, which shows the chair which is still with it today. Comprising of 2 parts, made in an eclectic style with influences of gothic revival/ moorish elements and to french and english design. The top section made in walnut and burrs, with a central double door cupboard containing 2 shelves. Each door with lavish borders, moulding, brass stringing and a hand etched panel.
Below the cabinet is a large space for storage. Either side an arched single shelf aperture with 2 drawers below in the same manner. The lower section provides a generous writing space, beautifully let with various natural burrs of varying density, all surrounded in inlaid brass. Octagonal corners with architectural floating columns. 3 drawers above the knee which have been profusely carved depicting foliage, this is carried on around the sides. Top supported by 2 carved, turned and barley twisted legs, terminating on a octagonal block foot, stretchers link to the back board. To finish this piece off, we are pleased to present it with it's original chair, which is a fine piece of furniture in it's own right. Clearly made at the same time and by the same hand. Shaped back rest with fluted supports. Similar carved foliage around the seat, legs that match the desk and standing on 4 carved hoof feet.
Expected very minor surface marks from use. One tip of foot with restoration, which has been professionally repaired and photographed. A truly stunning piece of furniture.
