This large 19th Century Victorian antique campho-wood chest was made circa 1870 when there was much upheaval and troubles in the untamed areas of Afghanistan, and the Northwest Frontier. The wonderful example I have here is one of the largest I have seen, and exceptional due to the size. It has an original tray, also made of camphorwood that is easily lifted in and out. British Officers would need strong durable chests to transport their uniforms and effects on the long arduous and dangerous journeys, hence why these trunks had brass corners to protect these, they also had the advantage of looking attractive. Another sign of it being superior quality is that the corners rather being nailed in, each one has been screwed into place. We have left the old repair in place to the rear of the lid, where a plate has been secured as it adds to the wonderful tapestry of life and the stories this remarkable trunk could tell. Camphor wood has a natural perfume and so when the trunk is opened you experience a gentle aroma of this most pleasant perfume. This Camphorwood was especially important in the East as insects avoid it and so it meant the uniforms etc were free from attack, especially moths.
