Description
A charming oil on artist board of Oddicombe Bay, Torquay, by Albert Starling (1858-1947). The painting is beautifully light and fresh and captures perfectly the Devon coast on a sunny summer’s day. The technique is confident and quick with a use of a dry brush and paint to give a hazy textured feel. The work is not signed to the front but is inscribed on the reverse to the artist and the location. Albert Starling is a well-known and regarded artist who exhibited in various genres and very widely. He had 16 works at the Royal Academy and 28 at the Royal Academy of Arts Birmingham and exhibited at every other major gallery. This piece is a fine example of his landscape work. The painting has been reshaped to oval perhaps at the time it was painted or slightly later and framed in a simple textured oval gilt frame. The whole is in good condition and has a great feel of the English Riviera in the twenties.
