Description
Super quality oil painting titled 'Two causes'. The frame and board on which the oil is painted appear to come from a piece of early furniture. Gerald was born in 1938 in Colchester and from 1955-59 attended the Colchester School of Art where he was taught by John O’Connor, Hugh Cronin and Richard Chopping. From there he won a place at the Royal College of Art from 1959-1962 where he met and was influenced by Richard Hamilton and Carel Weight. In 1962 he took over as editor of Ark Magazine, the journal of the students at the Rca. In 1963, Issue 34, a largely imaged-based number, contained a range of irreverent and satirical photo-montages, involving Princess Margaret and Winston Churchill, among others. This issue was deemed to controversial for publication and the run was ultimately pulped. That would be a great number to find if any were kept back from pulping! He went on to edit the Architectural review from 1963-7 and from then on concentrated on being a painter, sculptor, poet and teacher. Gerald exhibited in many countries including Germany and Poland along with the highly influential Young Contemporaries from 1958-60. In 2000 he exhibited at Kettles Yard in Cambridge which is probably where his work is at it’s most artistically and intellectually happiest. A true innovator who is always pushing artistic boundaries.
