Description
The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely.
The watch measures 46mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 935 silver so slightly purer sterling silver, and there are Continental hallmarks together with the case maker’s mark for François Borgel.
Borgel was a very successful inventor and business man, and his company became one of the most important watch case manufacturers of its time. He advertised his screw watch case, such as this example, as "imperméable", which means that he considered his screw case to be waterproof. Early adopters of the Borgel screw case included Longines and Iwc. After François Borgel’s death in 1912, the business was carried on by his daughter Louisa. As with any vintage watch, however, strongly advise that it is kept away from water and moisture.
Alongside the marks, there is also a brevet (patent) number 4001 which relates to an 1890s patent by Borgel for a new case design.
The case is in good condition, just light surface marking but nothing too serious at all.
The acrylic lens is in good condition.
The dial is in lovely condition with original pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
