Set 4 Antique Vanity Fair Spy Prints – Men of the Day
A set of 4 antique Vanity Fair “Men of the Day” framed prints mounted and glazed in glossy black frames, these antique prints are a good collection to bring a little satirical humour to your wall.
Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page color lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. The primary artists were Carlo Pellegrini “Ape” and Leslie Ward “Spy”, and it is because of the latter artist as to why these prints are often collectively referred to as “Spy Prints”.
This set of 4 includes:
“Men of The Day No.19”, A caricature portrait of professor Huxley originally published on January 28th, 1871 in Vanity Fair. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.
“Men of The Day No.25”, A caricature portrait of Sir Roger Doughty Tichborne, Bart originally published on June 10, 1871 in Vanity Fair. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”.
“Men of The Day No.63”, A caricature portrait of Mr. William Powell Frith, R.A. originally published on May 10, 1873 in Vanity Fair. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.
“Men of The Day No.60”, A caricature portrait of Mr Anthony Trollope originally published on April 5, 1873 in Vanity Fair. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.
