Description
We offer for consideration, this stunning George III fusee drop dial timepiece, by master clockmaker William Swann of Stockport, Lancs. William Swann was born into a Lancastrian cabinet and clockmaking family in 1764, a family that specialised in building longcase clocks. Having served as apprentice to his father and uncle for many years, William set-up on his own in Lower Hillgate, Stockport circa 1796 and started to produce a larger range of prestige commissioned clocks for the landed gentry of the day. In line with this background, it is easy to understand why this is such a stunningly pleasing and collectable clock. The beautifully hand-crafted and original burr Walnut cabinet work, with octogen-shaped head over a radiused finished drop box, is expertly garnished with a delicate brass render of stringing intarsia, together with further brass embellishment surrounding its creatively shaped front visible pendulum glazed aperture. There is also an intricate fretted sound panel to the side of the case and a turn catch hinged inspection door to the bottom of the box. The dial has black painted Roman numerals and Swann’s details, finished with its pair of original blued Spade hands secured with a pinned collet. The clocks face is then protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in its brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement with shouldered plates and turned pillars in line with period build and comes with its original 80mm diameter brass pendulum and a winding key. With all its outstanding and original hand-crafted component parts, this is a timepiece of exquisite character and presence, a true testament to late 18th Century English clockmaking expertise and craftsmanship and we offer it out at a fabulous investment price!
