The Ancient Medieval Giant Eagle Silver Ring

This substantial 15th Century Eastern European ring features an eagle with its wings spread. The shoulders each feature an intaglio frond leading to lateral disc panels each with a fleur-de-lys motif. To the base is a knop. At a staggering 44.12 grams, this ring is a large and bold piece of fully wearable medieval statement jewellery. Approximately Size U UK/Au, 10 ¼ Us/Ca, 62 ¾ Fr/Ru Provenance: Acquired from an established Bnta and Aiaa registered ancient art dealer. Formerly from the private collection of a Russian gentleman living in London; acquired from a Chelsea collector in the 2000s; the Chelsea collection having been formed from 1970-1990s. See Cf. The iconography of the ring is European but the inspiration for the type, with raised knops to the hoop, is probably Islamic - Seljuk or Timurid in origin (see Chadour, 1994, items 530, 533, 535).
