Frederick Dade was born in Scarborough in 1874. He studied at Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange and was among the prize winners in 1891 and 1892. He carried on working and exhibiting in this area and also has pictures in important collections including the National Maritime Museum and Scarborough Museum. His artistic focus was on the sea and fishing so this work is very unusual for him.
