Description

This is a lovely antique sterling silver monteith or punch bowl made by William Hutton & Sons and clearly hallmarked for Chester 1913. A monteith was designed for cooling glasses and named after an eccentric Scotsman who apparently wore a cloak with a cut out hem. They are now mainly used as punch bowls.

This one is in very good condition, was given as the Captain's prize at Surbiton Golf Club in 1914 but the monteith is made with a thick gauge of silver and the lightly engraved inscription could be removed.

It sits firmly on a raised circular base and there are cherub faces as part of the decoration to the scalloped rim. The handles are substantial and attractively fixed to lions heads. (NB any shadows shown in the photographs are merely reflections).

This is a fine piece of antique sterling silver from these well known makers.
