Of all chairs in our home the armchair is perhaps our most important. It is the chair we trust the most to relax us after a long day and put us in the right mood. Although armchairs today are usually low and open (since we have warm centrally heated houses), antique versions are often taller with padded baffled sides to keep in the radiated heat from the fire and raised exposed legs so you can clean underneath it easily. This traditional form envelopes us in its upholstered splendour and when it retains its original covers, the unapologetic wear adds a warmth and honesty we admire. Here 19th Century chair designs are great for their look and practicality.
As the 20th Century began the rigorous study of ergonomics would play a giant part in the overall design and form of our armchairs. From the minimalist approaches of Bauhaus to the sculptural excesses of Art Deco or Modernism, the armchair soon became a finely engineered work of art.
