There are few things as pleasing as antique door fixings and stoppers. Whether you are looking to replace a wobbly handle or update your entrance with another door knocker, genuine antique and vintage fixings will give the door an instant air of grace. Usually cast in solid heavy brass or iron (unlike modern copies which are often brittle spelter) these items were made to last and to impress.
During the 18th and 19th Centuries the home as a visual status symbol continued to grow and door furniture such as handles and knockers became a clear part of that symbolism. Classical images of lions and maidens abounded and big heavy doors would be held back with elegantly cast stoppers. It was the industrial revolution of the 18th Century which we have to thank for the mass of good quality antique fixings we still find as mass production brought the costs down to everyone. By the 20th Century most of that blatant grandeur had been toned down but style and elegance persisted.
