Mantel clocks 1st appeared during the middle of the 18th Century in France and were created (as the name suggests) to sit on top of a shelf or mantel over the fireplace. Intended to be seen, the cases were designed in a range in materials from Mahogany and Oak, metal, Marble and porcelain and reflected the fashions of the day. While the movement and dial were kept to a minimum, Mantel clocks soon became all about the case. By the 19th Century they could be found in all manner of shapes from buildings, statues, vases, boxes as well as brass Skeleton clocks and much more. During the 20th Century much of that excessive ornamentation was removed to leave simple elegant forms. Due to their smaller size, variety and aesthetic appeal, antique and vintage Mantel clocks remain very popular and versatile today.
