Description

Here is an impressive and beautifully made vase from the great period of English designer-led art pottery.

Frederick Rhead, one of the great English art pottery designers and the father of both Charlotte and Frederick Hurten Rhead, spent a period of time in the United States after his tile firm went bust, and there he rubbed shoulders with some great potters including Taxile Doat. On his return ot England, he joined the firm of Wood and Sons as their art director, and shortly afterwards moved his studio to the new company Woods had set up, Bursley Ltd, at which he was joined by his daughter Charlotte.

In about 1918 Woods began to market items under the brand name "Bursley Ware", and various patterns were introduced, including the one on this vase "Bagdad".

The pattern is transfer printed with additional hand painting, and is heavily influenced by the Iznik pottery produced in Persia from about the 15th to the 18th centuries. This vase even borrows the typical shape of that type of pottery.

The vase has a printed mark on the base "Bursley Ware - Bagdad" and a painted decorator's mark. The pattern shows stylised lotus flowers in blue and white on an orange/brown ground and bands of overlapping flowers in white with orange/brown centres.
