He was born in Oldham in 1924 leaving school at 14 and working in various jobs for the next 40 years. He always had a passion for painting and was rarely seen without paper and pencil making sketches. He attended adult art evening classes, studying life drawing for many years and when faced with redundancy at the age of fifty six, he decided to become a full time artist. After a period of little commercial success, he moved to a studio at the Alexandra Centre in Uppermill, Lancashire. From then on his work became increasingly popular achieved both commercial and critical acclaim. He had numerous successful solo exhibitions, ranging from Manchester, Falmouth and London, with his work being purchased by the House of Lords and now hanging in the Committee Rooms. A book covering his life and work, entitled John Thompson - "Do you like 'em then" was published in 2006. His work is seen firmly within the Northern School, including Alan Lowndes, Theodore Major and even L S Lowry. Frame size; 33 cm x 43 cm Image size; 23 cm x 33 cm
