These is something warm and nostalgic about old advertising posters. Their bright colours, quirky artwork and fun catchphrases transport us to their long-lost world. They were each created to show how their product epitomised a bright new future of innovation or excellence. Today these posters really suit our modern walls as they provide us with an engaging item without the formalities of more formal art works. Although 2 tone colour printing began in the early 19th Century, it was not really until the late 19th Century that it was widely employed for advertising posters.
During the 19th Century most posters were text heavy, but as the 20th Century came about a shift took place whereby advertising posters became predominantly about the image and far less about the associated text. Either type of paper poster can look great on display, and it just comes down to whichever piece appeals to you. Posters from the 1940s onwards are particularly popular right now. Of course, people have been reproducing old posters for many years now, but since the paper and printing process is very different nothing is as appealing as an original.
