Georgian Oak Cabriole Leg Lowboy. Antique Side Table. Sofa or Dressing Table
This is an excellent example of antique English Georgian Furniture.
The oak lowboy dates to about 1730. It stands on 4 carefully balanced cabriole legs, and demonstrates well the art and skills of 18th century craftsmanship.
It has deep 'ogee' shaped aprons on the front and sides, and each of the well shaped cabriole legs finish with fine round pad feet. These pads have been designed and crafted intentionally slim and flat to give the piece it's exceptional presence and well balanced stature.
The 3 drawers, and the top are cross banded in a contrasting blend of mahogany, a fashionable feature of the time and reflecting the styles of more refined 'upmarket'walnut pieces of the period.
The top has a good over hang and notably has rounded corners to all 4 sides - not flat at the back to stand against a wall. So it may have been intended for a more central position in a room, this would explain why the back is polished also - perhaps for use at the foot of a bed or to the side of a sofa. Either way, a very nice feature.
The pine drawer linings are all original and of rebate and nailed construction. The brass bail handles are of the period and there is no scarring from previous handle sets
A very clean and unblemished George II table
