Georgian Oak Cabriole Leg Lowboy. George II C.1730
I am delighted to be able to offer this excellent example of antique English provincial furniture for sale.
This Oak Lowboy dates to about 1730. It stands on 4 bold and beautifully balanced cabriole legs, and demonstrates some particularly nice design features.
It has deep 'ogee' shaped aprons on 3 sides, and each of the well shaped cabriole legs finish with fine round pad feet. These pads have been designed and crafted intentionally slim and flat which help to give the piece it's exceptional presence and well balanced stature.
The 3 drawers, and the top are cross banded in a contrasting blend of mahogany, a fashionable feature of the time and reflecting the styles of more refined 'upmarket'walnut pieces of the period.
The top is also unusual in having rounded corners to all 4 sides - not being flat at the back to stand against a wall. So it may have been intended for a more central position in a room - perhaps at the foot of a bed or to the side of a sofa. Either way, a very nice feature.
The pine drawer lining is of nailed construction and all appear to be original. The brass bail handles are period also and there is no scarring from previous handle sets
A very clean and unblemished table of the early Georgian period.
