Description

An outstanding and stylish late Regency birds eye maple oval centre table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. Throughout, the table has beautiful figured birds eye maple with tulip shaped moulding around the frieze of the top with a central tapering column terminating to out swept scrolls finished with turned paterae. The tables oval platform base mirrors the shape of the top which has a turned moulded edge and turned feet with inset castors.

Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow who was a cabinet maker and overseas merchant. He had direct access to imported timber from the West Indies and created the finest quality furniture. In 1757 Robert went in to partnership with his son Richard who was an architect. In 1768 Robert retired and his son Robert II joined the family business opening a shop in Oxford Street London. Throughout the Victorian era Gillows of Lancaster and London had a renowned reputation for their quality of work and helped furnish many aristocratic houses.
